This print is from the ongoing photographic series Beneath | Beofhód (2018-present) which explores the bogs of the Irish midlands and the culture around them. It reflects on Ireland’s changing relationship with bogs and draws upon themes of nostalgia, change, fragility and time. It utilises a topographical mapping of Irelands peatlands as a metaphorical exploration of Ireland, society and self.

The project has different volumes exploring various aspects of bogs including the de-industrialisation of the landscape, turf cutting, communities connected to peatlands and the idea of a ‘Just Transition’. All volumes meditate on our place within the environment, our relationship with bogs and how we perceive them.

About the Artist

Shane Hynan is a full-time photographer and visual artist based in Kildare, Ireland. He works primarily with photography but experiments with sound, video, collage, text and sculpture. His practice draws upon conceptual and documentary photographic approaches and focuses on rural Ireland, bogs and the built environment.

The use of photography as a tool of expression, drawing on an emotional and intuitive connection with landscape and topography, is a central concern within his work. The metaphorical exploration of place and space underpins his visual enquiry and acts as a significant subtext throughout his practice. Recently he’s begun to explore placemaking and community engagement uncovering the rich layers of stories preserved in rural people, place and land.

He has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally in China, Germany and the UK. He’s received numerous awards including a Visual Arts Bursary Award from the Arts Council in 2020 and 2022. He is also a finalist in the upcoming 2023 Association of Photographers Open awards.
