By exploring portal fantasy as a literary device and combining it with research on dissociation and dissociated states, this work in progress explores the shifts- both in reality and mentally- that people create to maintain their own sense of safety.

This specific image is the entrance to a cave on the south coast of Dublin, locally referred to as Decko’s Cave. There are conflicting accounts of a man who lived here, some claiming he was an ex-sailor that slept in a hammock, others report that he slept in an iron bed that is still there to this day. Some accounts reference his mental state and a desire to emulate Robinson Crusoe.

About the Artist

Aoife Herrity is a visual artist born in Dublin. Her artistic concerns relate to interpersonal trauma and its many impacts. She works with lens-based media as a way to visualise and articulate these responses. Herrity engages with corporeal writing and the felt sense, with a view to expanding her practice by incorporating spoken word and soundscapes.

Her 2020 photographic series Sleeping Dogs Lie explored themes of implicit memory and the freeze response in quotidian spaces. By revisiting both family and personal histories, Herrity explored emotional discomfort through the creation of psychological landscapes and speculated on the complex area of grooming and child sexual abuse.

Current interests look at dissociation and psychological responses to space; specifically the ability to conjure environments in order to escape or alleviate psychological discomfort. This has manifested through portals, thresholds and the concept of dual, multiple and imaginary realities. Herrity holds an MFA from Ulster University and is a lecturer at IADT Dun Laoghaire.
