Catalog of the 8th African photography biennial, held in Bamako, Mali, Nov. 7-Dec. 7, 2009.

Since 1994, the Bamako Encounters (Rencontres de Bamako), co-organized and co-produced by Mali’s Ministry of Culture and l’Institut Français, have been held every two years in Bamako.

International in scope, this cultural event focusing on issues in contemporary photography and video features exhibits, professional encounters, workshops, public projections and catalogue, which serve as a catalyst for the Continent’s artists, image professionals and the public at large.

The Bamako Encounters is aimed at promoting the various trends in contemporary photography and video in Africa by creating international exchange among artists, the public, curators, commissioners, the media and collectors.

The Bamako Encounters work with a highly diverse group of local and international partners (museums, galleries, foundations, art centres, public places, French cultural centres, art schools, photography training centres, cultural associations) to present a series of exhibits scattered throughout the city, thereby turning Bamako into a vast group exhibit, at once coherent and stimulating, centring on a guiding concept.

Michket Krifa is the artistic co-director of the 8th and 9th Bamako Encounters, and lives and works in Paris. An independent visual-arts curator in the Middle East and Africa, her sensitivity led her on several occasions to organize themed exhibitions on Iran, Tunisia and Algeria, including many exhibitions on representation and women issues. Michket Krifa has also been responsible for collective and monographic exhibitions.

Laura Serrani is the Italian artistic co-director of the 8th and 9th Bamako Encounters, and lives in Paris. An international exhibit, audiovisual and editorial-writing projects curator with a career filled with collaborations. She works with several publishing houses and writes numerous publications along with “La photographie entre histoire et poésie”, “Istanbul”, d’Ara Güler, “La vie en rose”, de Malick Sidibé.

Actes Sud is a publishing house based in Arles, France.
