Historically in war, men have predominantly associated with battle and strength. In her own personal battle with chronic pain O’Riordan equates herself as the Greek goddess “Athena”, goddess of war and practical reason. Each day becomes a personal battle dealing with the complexities and difficulties of dealing with constant pain. By presenting herself as “Athena”, by her empowered gaze and battle attire, O’Riordan uses them as visual metaphors of her own personal struggle.

About the Artist

Amy O’Riordan is an artist who works both behind and in front of the lens of her camera where she oversees every detail of costumes, make up and prop. Her self portraits explore her personal and gender identity through performance. By presenting her photographic images, a privileged glimpse into her intimate world is provided to her audience. Also by making references to the historical traditions of painting, O’Riordan presents her own image as a modern, iconic, empowered female directly subverting the gaze. By working both in front of and behind the camera she maintains complete bodily autonomy. Her narratives are also based on her lived personal experience as an artist living with chronic pain due to a life changing accident, eleven years ago. Focusing on her photographic art professionally has given her a tremendous sense of joy, purpose and catharsis despite her physical challenges and constant pain.
